The University of North Carolina will test the first batch of applicants to see if their protective clothing lurks harmful chemicals and biological threats.
The Human Simulation (MIST) Laboratory, located at UNC’s Textile School, is where researchers evaluate the non-toxic properties of chemical and biological components contained in protective clothing. The new experimental equipment will provide researchers with the necessary technological advances to help them produce experimental results and analyze results more quickly than with similar equipment.
The MIST laboratory is the only laboratory of its kind built in an American university. The U.S. Department of Defense approved US$2 million and was built two years ago.
In the main experimental room, researchers can experiment with the penetration of chemical gases using protective clothing worn by mannequins or living subjects. In the experiment, subjects can be carried out on tasks such as climbing ladders, crawling, or carrying a victim to a safe area. The temperature, wind and substance concentration of the experimental environment can be controlled.
The target garment wears a viscose core panel underneath, which will be used to analyze whether gas penetrates the fabric, seams, and seals of the garment.
Another main laboratory facility includes an observation and control room, a conference room with closed-circuit television video for experimental monitoring, a data acquisition room, and a dressing and target preparation area.
Building on previous and ongoing projects at NC State, the new lab increases research and development capabilities for next-generation protective apparel.
Over the past decade, researchers have completed projects that have led to advances in protective clothing in many ways, including fire-resistant, heat-resistant clothing fabrics worn by firefighters and surgical gowns that give doctors and nurses more protection from blood-borne infections and other biological threats. , outdoor clothing that provides workers with additional protection from hazardous chemicals.
