Asics becomes the first company to sign the environmental protection convention FashionPact

The well-known sports brand Asics recently announced that it has become the first Japanese company to sign the environmental protection pact “Fashion Pact”, which was signed by French President Emmanuel Macron and Kering CEO Inaugurated in August 2020 by François-Henri Pinault. The agreement contains three commitments, namely mitigating climate change, restoring biodiversity, and protecting oceans. Signed by 32 well-known global brands and textile companies, its focus is the fashion industry, the world’s second most polluting industry.

Asics takes global climate change seriously and committed last year to setting science-based emission reduction targets to limit global temperature rise to 1.5° above pre-industrial levels. Within the scope of C, it is expected to achieve zero emissions by 2050. The company currently aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its business premises by 38% by 2030 compared to a 2015 baseline, and expects to achieve a 55% reduction in exhibit manufacturing processes.

In response to the agreement to restore biodiversity and protect the ocean, Asics committed to purchasing 100% sustainable cotton for its clothing and accessories by 2025 and by the end of 2020. Previously, plastic shopping bags in all directly operated stores were replaced by paper bags. In addition, in order to eliminate single-use plastics in the entire supply chain, where plastic materials must be used, they will be replaced with environmentally friendly materials.

Asics President and Chief Operating Officer Yasuhito Hirota said: Since our founding in 1949, our goal has always been to help people achieve a healthy body and mind. To achieve this, we need a sustainable planet. In order to further expand our actions in mitigating climate change, maintaining biodiversity and protecting marine ecology, we hope to become a member of “FashionnPact” and work together to promote industry transformation through cooperation.
