Fashion industry production returns to Europe
According to a report by Germany’s Handelsblatt on October 16, China and Bangladesh are the most important fashion manufacturing countries today. A study shows that production in Europe has decisive advantages.
China and Bangladesh are also by far Germany’s most important fashion retail suppliers. Fashion production is increasingly returning to Europe, according to a study published on Tuesday by consulting firm McKinsey, RWTH Aachen University and the Center for Digital Competence in Aachen.
Before the investigation, the low wages in the fashion industry in China and Southeast Asia were unparalleled in other regions. But now the trend is starting to turn: taking into account transportation and import costs, jeans produced in Turkey now cost 3% less than in China. McKinsey expert Carl Hendrick Magnus said: “For low-cost production of clothing, it is worthwhile to return production to Europe.”
Experts emphasize that even more important for production in Europe is the extremely shortened delivery time: it allows fashion companies to react to trends faster. It takes up to 30 days to ship clothing produced in Southeast Asia to the Western market, while it only takes 3-6 days to ship from Turkey to Germany. Asim Begg, director of fashion industry consulting at McKinsey, said fast response times are necessary to stay competitive. Another driver for European production in the fashion industry is automation.
Experts say that in the next 10 years, automation can reduce work time by 40% (for clothes with complex designs) to 70% (for simple clothes). This will reduce costs by a significant amount: it will take only 11 minutes to produce a simple pair of jeans instead of 36 minutes. (Title: Fashion industry production returns to Europe)
