Some jackets that are windproof, waterproof, and breathable have the waterproof function automatically “cleared” after 10 washes, but the manufacturers never make this clear; the actual measured fiber composition marked on the jacket has no trace of it, and the product is completely different. Made of fiber… This is a problem discovered in the 2014 comparative test of jackets recently conducted by the Shanghai Consumer Protection Commission.
It is worth noting that the waterproof performance of most jacket products currently on the market comes from the coating on the surface of the fabric. As the number of washes increases, the coating may gradually fall off or dissolve, affecting its waterproof performance. The test results showed that before washing, 37 of the 40 samples had excellent anti-wetting properties, 1 sample had excellent anti-wetting properties, and 2 samples had poor anti-wetting properties; after 5 times of washing, there were 25 samples have good anti-wetting properties or have anti-wetting properties, 9 samples have poor anti-wetting properties, and 6 samples have no anti-wetting properties; after 10 times of washing, 16 samples have good anti-wetting properties. The anti-wetting properties or anti-wetting properties of 14 samples have poor or poor anti-wetting properties, and 10 samples do not have anti-wetting properties, including many well-known brands.
Products with anti-wetting properties “shrunk” from 95% before washing to 40% after 10 times, but none of the 40 samples tested were labeled with relevant tips or explanations. In this regard, the relevant person in charge of the Shanghai Consumer Protection Commission pointed out that as a kind of functional clothing, the waterproof performance of jackets will decrease with the increase of washing times, and companies should provide tips or explanations to consumers on product labels.
